The Runaway King

The Runaway King - Jennifer A. Nielsen

While I enjoyed all of Jaron's scheming once again, I preferred his scheming in the first book. He felt far more like a master manipulator in the first book, whereas here, a lot of his plans seemed to come down to dumb luck. That's mostly due to how many more variables that were outside of his control were at play in this book, but it made the end of this book feel a lot less like a good plan working out (like the first book) and far more like Jaron just getting extremely lucky. The book's enjoyable, but I found the first book more interesting.
